Political Slugfest in Amethi
Amethi, a traditional stronghold of the Gandhi family from where Rahul Gandhi is the incumbent MP, is witnessing a three-way contest between the Congress vice president, BJP’s Smriti Irani and Aam Aadmi Party’s Kumar Vishwas. The campaign in Amethi is significant because: Sonia Gandhi addressed her first election rally in Amethi after a gap of 10 years, and Modi, for the first time, undertook electioneering in the constituency.
Breaking an unwritten code, Narendra Modi held a rally in the Gandhi family pocketborough, attacking “family” politics and said he has not come for “revenge” but for “change” in this backward region.
“I have not come here for revenge. I have come here for bringing about a change in this constituency which has been neglected by the Gandhi family despite representing it for 40 years. You just invoke family relations with the people here but do nothing for its development,” the BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate said. He also went on to say, ”If I lose, my kettle is ready. I will go back and sell tea,”
In return, Priyanka Gandhi hit out at Narendra Modi saying he has insulted her “martyred” father Rajiv Gandhi during his speech in Amethi and accused BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate of indulging in “low-level” politics. in an interview.
She also courted another contrvioersy. When asked about the attacks against Congress by Irani, she had asked, “Who”? When the reporter repeated, “Smriti Irani,” she said grinning,”Oh”.
Taking a swipe at Priyanka, Modi said her Irani “who” comment was a reflection of “arrogance” and asserted that the BJP candidate against Rahul Gandhi was his “younger sister” who knows much more about Amethi than the entire Gandhi family.
Modi without taking the name of Priyanka said, “One of their (Congress) leaders even asked who is Smriti Irani? In democracy the royals do not have the right to ask such questions. This is nothing, but arrogance. When arrogance grows, people tend to lose their sense and they ask such questions.” He went on to add, “I want to tell who is Smriti Irani. She is my younger sister and she will take care of your welfare and development.”
Meanwhile, Kumar Vishwas alleged that his family had been asked to leave the constituency or face forceful eviction. According to sources, district police officials late Monday reached the rented accommodation of the AAP leader and asked his wife and other relatives along with the children to leave the constituency.
