Lok Sabha elections 2014 in April-May
First indications are that the General Elections 2014 to elect members to the 16th Lok Sabha will be a 5-6 phase affair spanning April and May.
The gigantic exercise stacks up thus:
About 80 crore eligible voters will elect members to the 543-seat Lok Sabha. For which “1.1 crore election personnel, half of them being security forces,” will be deployed in approximately 8 lakh polling stations.
According to the Election Commission, during the 2009 polls, there were 71.4 crore voters against 67.1 crore voters in 2004 Lok Sabha polls.
Simultaneous polls to be held for the Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim Assemblies.
The schedule for the polls is expected by February-end or beginning of March.
The model code of conduct will kick in immediately after the announcement of the poll schedule.
The revision of electoral rolls to include new voters who attained the age of 18 before January 1, 2014 is under way.
