Chhattisgarh phase 2 polls: Brisk turnout amid high security

Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Kujur said the tentative voter turnout was 74.70 percent.

05:00 PM: Barring the death of a person in a trooper’s gun fire at a polling booth, the polling was largely peaceful.

04:30 PM: Nearly 55 per cent voters in 72 constituencies across 19 districts of Chhattisgarh exercised their franchise till 3 PM.  A man was killed and another injured in an alleged accidental firing by a CRPF personnel at Bhindarwani polling booth of Saja constituency in Bemetara district. Polling was withheld for about half-an-hour after the incident

03.50 PM: One person was killed and another injured at a polling booth in Saja assembly constituency when a CRPF trooper opened fire at a group of people following an argument, police said.

03:00 PM: 30 per cent polling recorded till noon.

01:08 PM: Minor clashes between ruling Bharatiya Janata Party cadres and the Congress workers were reported in Durg city. More than four million voters have cast their ballot.

12:00 PM:  About 30 percent voting was recorded till noon.

There was heavy polling in a few assembly constituencies, including Marwahi.

Congress leader Ajit Jogi’s son Amit Jogi is contesting from Marwahi that recorded in excess of 40 percent voting by noon.

The second and final phase of the elections to the state assembly saw minor clashes between ruling Bharatiya Janata Party cadres and the Congress workers in Durg City as well as Bilaspur assembly constituencies.

11:00 AM: About 15 per cent of the electorate cast their votes in the first hours of polling. No untoward incident has been reported so far from any part of the state. “The polling in 72 constituencies of 19 districts began from 8 AM and so far 15 per cent turnout has been recorded,” an official at the Chief Electoral Office told PTI. Meanwhile, EVMs were changed at around 10 polling stations due to some technical problems.

10:30 AM:
Second phase voting has registered good voter turnout so far. Brisk polling in all urban and rural polling booth reported. A total of 18015 polling booths have been set up for the second phase, of which 4594 are sensitive booths, while 1398 are hyper-sensitive stations.

09:30 AM: The polling will take place in central and north Chhattisgarh, where 72 each from the BJP, and Congress, are in the fray. There are 75 women contestants. According to police, naxals may create some trouble in Mahasamund, Gariyaband and Dhamtari of Raipur division bordering Odisha and Jashpur, Raigarh and Ambikapur in north Chhattisgarh during polling process.

08:54 AM: Around 80,000 officials have been involved. A record 75.53 per cent voting was registered in the first phase of polling held on Nov 11 for 18 constituencies of naxal affected Bastar division and Rajnandgaon district. Counting will take place on December 8.

In 11 constituencies- Kota, Lormi, Takhatpur, Beltara, Chandrapur, Kasdol, Raipur city south, Durg city, Bhilai Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Bemetara more than one ballot unit will be used. Three ballot units will be placed only in Raipur city south.
