BJP welcomes ‘Cong’ MP
The Congress party in Madhaya Pradesh was ridden with factionalism. Come assembly elections, all the prominent factions has managed to put up a coherent picture, to trounce Shivraj Singh and company.
Just when the Congress was gaining ground, it received a severe blow, from which recuperation can be tough. Udai Pratap Singh, Congress leader and MP from Hoshangabad, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Singh clinched the Hoshangabad seat from the BJP, from the first time since 1989, when he defeated BJP leader Sartar SIngh.
Singh cited ill treatment by the Congress high command, as the principle reason behind his defection. According to Singh, he was made to wait outside vice-president, Rahul Gandhi’s residence in New Delhi, but Mr Gandhi did not give him an audience. Things went from bad to worse, when party devised the manifesto for assembly elections without consulting the rank and file.
Though his detractors in the congress party is painting a picture of betrayal and opportunism, but Singh denied contesting the Loksabha elections with a BJP ticket in 2014. According to the Rameshwar Neekhra, state congress Vice president, Singh betrayed the Congress which did so much for him.
